Flip and Flop puts the player in control of Flip the Kangaroo and Mitch the Monkey in a series of mazes, with the task of flipping all squares in the current level to progress. Levels are played twice, being completed by both Flip and Mitch.
Using the joystick, move Flip the Kangaroo, or Mitch the Monkey around the maze and move over all squares in the level with a hole in the middle. When moving over these tiles, they will flip and appear ‘solid’.
When dropping or jumping up to a platform, make sure to do so from a tile that has a ladder attached to it, otherwise Mitch or Flip will fall from the maze, losing a life.
You begin the game with 5 lives. Bonus lives are given for each maze that is completed.
There are a total of 36 levels in Flip and Flop. Each level builds the maze in complexity and size, up to level 13. The zookeeper and his net become more and more aggressive in higher levels.
In some levels, there are tiles marked with an “X”. These tiles must be moved over twice by Flip or Flop in order to flip them.
There are two types of enemies in Flip and Flop - the Zookeeper, and his flying net.
The Zookeeper appears when the player is controlling Flip from level 3 onwards. The Flying Net first appears in level 4 onwards, chasing the player in levels where Mitch is controlled.
The Zookeeper and Flying Net move around the maze in the same way as the player, hopping between tiles. a life is lost if the Zookeeper or Net land on the same tile that Mitch or Flip are currently standing on.
When the player is caught by an enemy, a life is lost, but the level can continue to be played from the position you were in if the player has another remaining life.
You are awarded 25 points for each square flipped over.
When a maze is completed, you receive 5 points for each second of time remaining on the clock.
Animated reward intermissions play after each 5 levels. They show Flip or Mitch back with their friends under the big top! You can press the fire button to skip through these sequences.
