Gameplay

Hunters moon tasks the player with controlling a pilot of the ship Hunter, tasked with blasting through the hives of multiple star systems, finding the Starcells within and escaping to the next hive.

Defending the Starcells are the invincible Workers which patrol the hives, spreading spores which comprise of various shapes between hives, and destroying your ship upon touching it. Workers can only be resisted by the ship’s Perma-Shield system, which can be activated in the Game Menu.

Collecting a Starcell which isn’t flashing will grant your ship temporary immunity to the spores the workers release.

At the start of each level, one Starcell on the radar will flash for eight seconds. Collect this Starcell before timer reaches zero to obtain a loopspace co-ordinate

Bonus game

When all the levels in the current Star System have been completed, or if you collect four Loopspace Co-ordinates you’ll warp to the Bonus Game, where the aim is to destroy all of the Workers as quickly as possible.

At the end of a Bonus Game, you’ll be awarded an extra Perma-Shield regardless of if you survived, along with an extra life if you destroy all 8 Workers.

System travel

Your ship can travel through the different hives in a system by obtaining loopspace co-ordinates using the Starmap. The Starmap appears between levels showing the layout of the current Star System, including unvisited hives, hives which have been cleared and your ship’s current position. Move and hold the joystick in the direction of the hive you wish to warp to and press fire when ready.

Game menu

To open the in-game menu, press the Pause button on the joystick, then move the joystick in any direction - a menu in the center of the screen should appear.

Option Description
Pilot one Swap the menu focus between the two pilots, if playing in two-player mode.
Engines Change the ship’s engine type. Engine type changes some of the characteristics of movement - find one that suits you.
Respray Customise the selected player’s ship colour to silver, colbalt, gold or custom.
Shields Activate the ship’s Perma-Shields, which provide immunity from Spores for the duration of the level.
Offduty Activates Off-Duty Mode.

Off-Duty Mode

Selecting Off-Duty Mode in the Game menu allows the player to modify the loopspace co-ordinates using the joystick. Move the joystick up and down to adjust the selected digit of the co-ordinates, shown in the bottom left-hand side of the screen - this will change the pattern of the Worker’s movement across the screen, creating different visual effects

Story

Memlog Hunter.9/thmw1:

‘Neat, my little ship. Good name: Hunter. Small and nifty, and it packs some punchy fire power. I’m damned well going to need it, aren’t I. Got a little carried away putting Hunter through its paces. Never took that Black Hole seriously enough. Warped me straight here, or where?

‘All I can see are endless crystal constructions, hive-like cities in space surrounding what look like starcells. On-board comp tells me they control those workers which seem to endlessly reconstruct the cities… Oh, yes, I’ve had a quick exploratory foray into the nearest hive. It was quick, because some of those workers shoot back. Any damage I caused is repaired already, and the hive sits there gleaming and glistening like new.’

‘On-board comp tells me that the only way home is to take on each and every one of these crystal cities. Some hope! But then, do I want to get back? Hell, I can’t just sit here, admiring the view, can I? They don’t call me psychoblaster for nothing-I’d better prove them right…’
