Doomdark’s Revenge puts the player in control of Luxor the Moonprince, who has the ability to command other armies and characters loyal to him.
Various factions can be found throughout Icemark which Luxor can persuade to join his cause. Once an ally has been gained, Luxor can issue commands and view the world from their perspective through the character selection menu.
Luxor can find various factions throughout the world of Icemark, choosing to recruit or battle them.
Luxor can control and view the status of allied characters through four different modes.
Some text that the Choose or Check options display may be too large for the screen to show all at once. When this happens, a prompt saying ‘More…’ will appear on the screen. Press A on the keyboard to view the remaining text when this happens.
The land of Icemark Cycles through a day and night cycle over time, separately for each character under your control. Once a character has exhausted all of their movement for the current day, night will fall for them. Characters are unable to move during the night.
The distance a character can move during the day depends on the terrain, whether they are riding or walking, and their general vigour. To reset every character back to dawn and restore their vigour, press the Night key to begin loading the next day. Before the next day begins, a summary is shown of important battles or events that have occurred in the current day - while this is happening, the computer will play out Luxor’s enemies actions for this turn.
When the message ‘Dawn Breaks’ is shown on the screen, press the Dawn key to continue playing.
If a character encounters another commander or army in the land of Icemark, the Choose screen can be used to either Approach or Attack.
Approaching provides the opportunity to speak with the character under a flag of truce, potentially persuading them to join Luxor’s cause. Alternatively, your character can choose to attack, starting a battle. Once a character has jkoined a battle, they will be unable to move until the following day. Other allied characters can be moved to the same location and join the battle, strengthening Luxor’s chance of winning.
Be careful which characters you approach! If the character turns hostile, approaching will leave you at a disadvantage in the coming battle.
The outcome of a battle will be revealed the following day. If the enemy has lost, their armies will either flee or be destroyed. Some battles can continue into the following day - if this happens, the army’s commanders can optionaly move away from the fight, exploring the map further.
For interfaces which present the player with multiple options (the Think and Choose options), a list of options is displayed depending on the game state, with a corresponding keyboard key next to them.
